Install on Mac

The Mac version of Plan Markup is a normal desktop app. It ships as a .dmg disk image: mount it, drag Plan Markup into your Applications folder, done. No installer wizard, no background services.

  1. Open the .dmg you received.
  2. Drag Plan Markup into /Applications.
  3. Eject the disk image and launch the app.

All file access sits behind the standard macOS open and save dialogs. The app reads and writes plan folders you pick yourself, and exports land where you tell them to: Documents, Desktop, Downloads, network volumes, removable drives. It does not request camera or microphone access, and it only reopens workspace folders you previously approved through the OS dialog.

That matters for bid work: your plan sets stay in the synced folders you already use (Dropbox, iCloud, a network share), and Plan Markup works against them in place. Markups save to a sidecar file next to each PDF, so the sync service you already trust carries your takeoff between machines. There is no Plan Markup cloud and no account to create.

This is a deliberate design decision, not a gap waiting to be filled. Plan Markup exists because Bluebeam Revu is Windows-only, which on a Mac means running it through a virtual machine. Plan Markup is built native for the Mac and stays focused there. Windows and Linux builds are out of scope. See Limitations and roadmap.

If you need Plan Markup on a machine that is not a Mac, the browser app runs the same viewer and the same markup file format in Chrome or Edge, with no install at all.

  • Run through the quickstart with a real plan set.
  • Set up your tool chest presets once, then export them as JSON to carry the same presets to your other Macs.
  • If you work inside Contractor Takeoff, markups you make on a bid’s documents appear in that bid’s workspace too. See the suite overview.
